…Charges workers on ethics, performance
The new Imo State Commissioner for Tourism, Barr Jerry Egemba, has stated government’s resolve to revitalize Imo State Tourism Board just as he charged the staff of the Board to be mindful of the provisions of the Public Service rules, and justify their appointments by effective performance of their duties.
Barr Egemba gave the assurance and charge in his office at a recent meeting with the management and staff of the Imo State Tourism Board.
He said, “government is passionate to revitalize the Board and we must do what we need to do to encourage government to implement its plans.
“The Tourism Board has become a matter of utmost importance to the Ministry and we must bring it to life; I see non-chalance and no commitment to duty at the Board”.
Wondering why a tourism facility that doesn’t meet its statutory obligations should be in operation, Barr Egemba charged the staff of the Board to get needed data on the facilities for administrative purposes and serve them notices to pay fees and levies they owed government.
He said, “the Board should ascertain the status of the facilities, that is, are they registered, do they have operational permits?
“If they don’t have, why should a facility in default be allowed to continue to operate?
“The Board should get more aggressive on distribution of demand notices”.
Speaking about work ethics and the readiness of the Ministry to support the activities of the Board, the Tourism Commissioner charged, “be mindful of the Public Service Rules, understand your roles as a Civil Servant, respect your seniors because I won’t tolerate insubordination; don’t undermine the authority of your leader but don’t participate in another person’s evil.
“You are part and parcel of the Ministry of Tourism and we care about you and would do whatever we can to ensure you work without inhibitions”, he assured.
In her remarks, the Acting General Manager, Imo Tourism Board, Ugochi Amajuoyi said the staff needed logistics support to run the office, drive revenue and make needed internally generated revenue returns.
“We need vehicles and security men to operate effectively, we have the law backing us but we are incapacitated by inadequate funds”
Contributing, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Tourism, Sir T.U.C. Nwokonkwo, commended the Commissioner for showing understanding of the mandate of his Ministry and pledged the loyalty of all the staff of the Ministry and its parastatals to the Commissioner.
“You have shown that you are ready to work, that you understand what to do, and where you are going.
“We will be loyal and cooperate with you to ensure that the flag of the Ministry continues to fly high, welcome to the Ministry”, he concluded
